About the Author

John W. Hughes was born in Rutherglen, Glasgow and was first a civil servant and then a telecoms tester. In 1972 he graduated from Strathclyde University and qualified as a teacher at Aberdeen. After a short spell in the Midlands he spent two years in coastal Papua New Guinea. Later he combined a brief period of administrative work at the then North London Polytechnic with postgraduate studies at the London School of Economics. Becoming interested in the teaching of English as a foreign language he worked in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Oman in that capacity. In the last named location he held the rank of civilian officer in the Sultan's Air Force.

Hughes died at Glasgow, Scotland, March 6th, 2004, at the age of 58 years.
